Job Description of Automation System Engineer

The Automation System Engineer will, under the guidance and direction of their designated line manager, perform the following duties with respect to the company operated broadcast automation systems.

• Possess or develop a deep understanding of the broadcast automation system or systems within the facility in which he/she is based
• Work with vendors and colleagues in the design and implementation of new systems
• Document their system designs, configurations, SOPs, and maintenance requirements
• Provide training to shift Engineers to enable them to provide Tier-2 support
• Provide Tier-3 support including:
o Diagnose faults in automation, or the operation of automation, by analyzing the automation system logs
o Undertake corrective maintenance as necessary to restore systems to full working order
o Undertake preventative maintenance to ensure systems are fully operational 24x7
o Undertake system upgrades to ensure systems are operating under the manufacturer recommended software and firmware releases
o Performing equipment adjustment and tuning to ensure the systems are operating to their correct technical specifications
o Raising tickets with the automation vendor and tracking those tickets to final closure
• Closely liaise with Operations to ensure flawless operation though all maintenance and upgrade activities
• Update documentation and drawings as required to maintain the company engineering records
Follow all SOP’s during maintenance activities
• Provide users and clients with professional, courteous, and timely technical support
• Other duties as may be assigned by the line manager or engineering management

Requirements of Automation System Engineer

At least two (2) years of experience in a similar role, specifically:
• Working with Grass Valley automation (iTX, Morpheus, Morpheus ICE) and/or
• Working with Pebble Beach automation (Neptune, Marina) and/or
• Working with Imagine Communications automation (D-Series, ADC, Versio) and/or
• Working with Inetsat automation and/or
• Working with any other mainstream broadcast automation system and
• A deep understanding of broadcast play-out workflows (Central Casting and/or Multi-Channel play-out) and
• A working knowledge of networking and IP technologies
• A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g. electronic engineering or electrical engineering) would be preferred
• Technical knowledge of digital video and audio formats
• Technical knowledge of broadcast automation
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, and ideally AutoCAD
